Privacy Policy

Captioned is a product of Anear Incorporation Private Limited ("Anear," "we," "us," or "our"), a company incorporated in India. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use Captioned, how we use it, and (because it comes up a lot) exactly what happens to your generated captions and saved brand voice.

By using Captioned, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.

1. Information We Collect

Account information. When you sign up, we collect your email address and, if you sign in with Google, the basic profile information Google shares with us (name, email, profile photo). Authentication is handled by our infrastructure provider, Supabase. We never see or store your password in plain text.

Payment information. If you subscribe to a paid plan, payment is handled entirely by our payment processor, Dodo Payments. We never see, store, or have access to your full card number or bank details. We only receive confirmation that a payment succeeded, which plan you're on, and your billing email.

Content you create. This includes the niche, topic, tone, call-to-action, and hashtag preferences you enter to generate a caption, along with any captions you choose to save.

Brand voice data. If you save a brand voice profile, we store the text you provide describing your brand's tone and style, so it can be reused across future caption generations.

Usage data. We track how many captions you've generated this billing period (to enforce your plan's limits) and when that count resets. Free-tier usage is tracked locally in your browser rather than on our servers.

Technical data. Like most web services, our hosting and infrastructure providers (Vercel, Supabase) automatically log standard technical information (IP address, browser type, timestamps) for security and reliability purposes.

2. How We Use Your Information

• To create and maintain your account, and let you log back in
• To generate the captions you request
• To apply your saved brand voice to future generations, if you've chosen to save one
• To process payments and manage your subscription
• To enforce plan limits (e.g. free-tier monthly caption caps)
• To send you service-related communications (e.g. confirming a subscription change), we don't send marketing email unless you separately opt in
• To keep the service secure and prevent abuse

3. Your Captions and Brand Voice - Confidentiality

We know a brand voice profile can describe genuinely proprietary information about how a business or creator communicates, and captions in progress can be commercially sensitive before they're posted. Here's exactly how that data is handled:

• Access is restricted to you. Your saved captions and brand voice profiles are protected by database-level access controls (row-level security) that only permit your own logged-in account to read or write them. Other Captioned users cannot see your brand voice or saved captions, and there is no feature that shares this data between accounts.
• Generation uses a third-party AI provider. To generate captions, the details you enter (niche, topic, tone, and your saved brand voice text, where applicable) are sent to Anthropic, whose Claude models power the generation, solely for the purpose of producing your output. We don't use your brand voice or generated captions to train any model ourselves. For details on how Anthropic itself handles data submitted through its API, see Anthropic's own privacy policy. We encourage you to review it if you have concerns about a specific AI provider's data practices.
• We don't sell or share your content. We do not sell your captions, brand voice text, or any other content you provide to third parties for advertising or any other unrelated purpose.
• You can delete it. You can delete individual saved captions from your dashboard at any time. To delete a saved brand voice profile or request full deletion of your account and associated content, contact us at the email below.

4. Third-Party Service Providers

We rely on a small number of trusted providers to run Captioned, each of which processes a limited slice of your data solely to provide their part of the service:

• Supabase - authentication and database hosting
• Dodo Payments - subscription billing and payment processing
• Anthropic - AI-powered caption generation
• Vercel - application hosting

These providers may process data outside India as part of their own global infrastructure. We choose providers who maintain their own strong security and privacy commitments, but we encourage you to review their respective privacy policies if you'd like more detail.

5. Cookies and Local Storage

We use your browser's local storage (not third-party tracking cookies) to keep track of your free-tier caption usage for the current month if you're not on a paid plan. We don't use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account information and saved content for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your associated personal data and saved content within a reasonable period, except where we're required to retain certain records (e.g. billing history) to comply with tax or legal obligations.

7. Your Rights

Depending on where you're located, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, including rights available to you under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. To exercise any of these rights, email us at the address below and we'll respond as promptly as we can.

8. Data Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) for all traffic and database-level access controls that restrict your data to your own account. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information against unauthorized access.

9. Children's Privacy

Captioned is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 18. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we'll delete it.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continuing to use Captioned after changes take effect means you accept the revised policy.
